Harvesting and Aggregating Storm Projections, Local Tides, Currents and Satellite Imagery
We have explored the concept of harvesting
Internet-accessible resources and aggregating them on
a single page - a sort of one-stop-shopping for information.
The National Weather Service offers an
experimental digital forecast web service
via SOAP services and XML files. In addition they also provide
RSS feeds
of their
weather bulletins as well as updated imagery. These resources are the elements
of our harvesting and aggregation experiments.
The RSS files are harvested and parsed
periodically (every 20 min or so). From the RSS files, we automatically extract
storm projection maps and advisory bulletins. We then display
the storm projections, satellite and radar imagery on the same page.
